Functional Form cutlery

This was my first design commission back in 1996, and I was over the moon to finally land a real contract. My dual training as both a goldsmith and a designer allowed me to combine functionality and sculptural beauty in this cutlery pattern.

I forged the design in metal to achieve a unity of function, material and finish. The result was a whole range of models, which I examined and used in every conceivable situation. I referred to the models as ‘my little letters’, because in addition to being functional, the individual pieces of the cutlery should form a unity when they were placed side by side. They should strike up a conversation.

I aimed to create compact pieces that were pleasant to hold and use, with organic lines that were simultaneously soft and taut. I wanted to make it a friendly design, with soft shapes that could approach the mouth without appearing fearsome.
